Part 1: Formulating Mineral Makeup

Module 1: Mineral Makeup Theory

This module teaches you the essentials for formulating mineral makeup.

1.1 Introduction to mineral makeup

Formulating mineral makeup is different to formulating other types of cosmetics. We’ll teach you how to measure very small quantities of ingredients, how to write makeup recipes/formulas, the equipment and packaging you’ll need, how to mix your ingredients properly (to avoid a streaky appearance on application) and where to buy your supplies.

1.2 Color theory

Delve into the world of color! Discover primary, secondary and tertiary colors, color harmony, hues, tints, tones, shades and undertones.

1.3 Mineral makeup ingredients

Find out about the essential ingredients that you’ll need to make your mineral makeup, and learn how to create a variety of base powders that are important for coverage, adhesion and slip (enabling the products to be easily and smoothly applied). Then, of course, colors are required! Learn about mineral pigments and micas, and how to check the INCI list to see which ones are accepted by organic certifications.

Module 2: Mineral Foundation

After taking this module you’ll be able to create loose mineral foundations for a range of skin tones.

2.1 Mineral foundation

You’ll learn how to create a base powder that provides coverage, adhesion and slip (enabling the products to be easily and smoothly applied), and how to add colored pigments to create a foundation to match your skin tone.

You’ll discover how to measure your ingredients and blend them properly to achieve a uniform product that applies evenly without streaks (which can be a problem if the product isn’t blended properly).

We provide six recipes for six different shades of foundation, and give you advice about how to further adjust the shade and the undertone to perfectly match your skin.

Our video demonstration will show you step by step how to make your own foundation.

Module 3: Mineral Eye Shadow

After taking this module you’ll be able to create a wide range of loose mineral eye shadows including shimmery eye shadows, matte eye shadows and satin eye shadows.

You’ll learn how to create a base powder that provides coverage, adhesion and slip (enabling the products to be easily and smoothly applied) and how to add colored pigments and micas to create a range of beautiful eye shadows in a range of colors and finishes (matte, shimmery and satin).

You’ll discover how to measure your ingredients and blend them properly – different methods are suitable for different types of eye shadow.

We provide 13 recipes for 13 different eye shadow shades and finishes. You’ll also gain the knowledge and confidence to create your own custom eye shadows – playing with colors and finishes to create something beautiful and unique.

Our video demonstration will show you step by step how to make your own eyeshadow.

6.4 Health, safety and best practice

Diploma in Formulating Natural Makeup and Advanced Color Cosmetics

Module 7: Advanced Lip Products

Formulate tinted lip balm, lip gloss, lipstick and lip liner pencils in matte, shimmery and glossy finishes. Create both highly pigmented and sheer products.

7.1 Introduction to formulating color cosmetics for lips

Discover the different types of color cosmetics for lips, and their properties and functions. Learn about pigments, fragrances and flavors for lip products, and storage and shelf-life of lip products.

7.2 Formulating tinted lip balm

Tinted lip balms nourish the lips with oils and butters, and provide a hint of sheer color (and sparkle, too, if you wish). Eternally popular and straightforward to make, these are the perfect lip product to make first.

7.3 Formulating lip gloss

Lip gloss adds a high shine gloss to the lips. They can be transparent or colored, and can be formulated in different shades with more or less pigmentation, depending on your preference. We’ll teach you two different kinds of base formula that can be used to create lip gloss.

7.4 Formulating lipstick

Lipsticks add strong color to the lips and contain lip-nourishing oils and butters. Lipsticks are highly pigmented and are usually made in a special mold to create a shape that is tapered at the top to allow for precise application. Watch our demonstration video to see how to use a lipstick mold to create a perfect and professional finish. Learn to use a blend of vegan waxes to create a vegan lipstick formula.

7.5 Formulating lip liner pencils

Lip liners come in the form of fine pencils. They define the line around the lips, and prevent the ‘bleeding’ of lipstick. They are highly pigmented to provide a strong line and visible color. Learn how to successfully formulate and make lip liner pencils using specialist pencil packaging. Watch our demonstration video to see how to make a lip liner, including how to fill the lip liner pencil to create a perfect and professional finish.

Diploma in Formulating Natural Makeup and Advanced Color Cosmetics

Module 8: Advanced Eye Makeup

Formulate a wide range of advanced products for the eye area including cream eye shadows, cream-to-powder eye shadows, eye shadow crayons, eye and eyebrow pencils, liquid eyeliner, mascara and eyebrow pomade.

8.1 Introduction to formulating color cosmetics for eyes

Discover the different types of color cosmetics for the eyes, and their properties and functions. Learn about eye-safe pigments, and the storage and shelf-life of eye makeup.

8.2 Formulating cream eye shadow, cream-to-powder eye shadow and eye crayons

Cream eye shadows contain a special blend of emollients, waxes, pigments and powders to create a product that feels like a creamy balm but has a dry powdery finish on the skin.

Eye shadow crayons are of a thicker, stiffer consistency and use special containers to create thick, chunky crayons that are easy to apply. Learn to formulate all three types of eyeshadow in this lesson.

8.3 Formulating eye and eyebrow pencils

Eye pencils are usually strongly pigmented to allow for a strong, visible line to appear after sliding the pencil over the skin, and are made in the form of thin cosmetic pencils. Eyebrow pencils are usually slightly less pigmented, to create a buildable and natural effect. Both follow similar principles, so you’ll learn to formulate both in this lesson.

8.4 Formulating liquid eyeliner

Liquid eyeliners are highly pigmented, water-based gels applied with a fine brush to paint a precise, well-defined line along the lash line to give the effect of thicker lashes. Our video demonstration will show you exactly how to make a liquid eyeliner. You’ll also receive the results of our microbiological testing (preservative efficacy test report) which proves this product is properly preserved and safe for use.

8.5 Formulating mascara

Mascara is highly pigmented using matte mineral pigments to darken the eyelashes. It makes the eyelashes thicker, as well as visually longer. Mascaras are high viscosity emulsions and advanced products to make, so we have provided two formulas for you to practice with: a beginners’ formula and a more advanced formula. You’ll receive the results of our microbiological testing (preservative efficacy test report) which proves the mascara is properly preserved and safe for use. Our video demonstration will show you how to make a mascara, step by step.

8.6 Formulating eyebrow pomade

Pomades, sometimes called eyebrow wax, can be hard, waxy balms, or softer, almost creamy products. They add color to the eyebrows, define their shape and also keep all the hairs in place, giving the look of well-groomed eyebrows. Make eyebrow pomade by following our formulation example and step-by-step instructions. Then use our template, guidelines and worksheet to formulate your own custom eyebrow pomade.

Diploma in Formulating Natural Makeup and Advanced Color Cosmetics

Module 9: Advanced Blushers, Bronzers and Highlighters

Formulate bronzer and blusher sticks, cream blush, mousse blush and liquid highlighter. Discover specialist ingredients used to provide the desired finish (dry, matte, silky, glossy, sparkly) texture, thickness and color.

9.1 Introduction to formulating advanced blushers, bronzers and highlighters

Discover the different types of advanced color cosmetics for the cheeks, their properties and functions, ingredients, storage and shelf-life.

9.2 Formulating bronzer, blusher and highlighter sticks

Sticks are a popular format as they are easy to apply and create a natural looking glow or sheen. Learn how to formulate and make bronzer, blusher and highlighter sticks by following our bronzer formulation example and step-by-step instructions. Then use our templates, guidelines and worksheets to formulate your own custom products, with just the right pigment and sparkle.

9.3 Formulating cream blush, bronzer and highlighter

Cream blushers and bronzers are actually anhydrous products rather than emulsions, as the name might imply. They are more advanced than regular balms as they contain special ingredients to provide the desired finish (dry, matte, silky, glossy, sparkly), texture, thickness and color. Practice with our cream blush formulation example and then formulate your own cream blushers, bronzers and highlighters.

9.4 Formulating mousse blush, bronzer and highlighter

These products are a special kind of aerated emulsion, with a distinct mousse-like texture. We’ll give you the tips and techniques for creating this special kind of product, a formulation example for a mousse blush to try, a video demonstration to watch and all the guidelines you need to formulate your own. You’ll receive the results of our microbiological testing (preservative efficacy test report) which proves the product is properly preserved and safe for use.

9.5 Formulating liquid blusher, bronzer and highlighter

Highlighters are used to enhance your complexion and add luminosity. For a natural glow use a highlighter to illuminate your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and below your eyebrows and cupid’s bow. Follow our formulation and video demonstration to make an emulsion-based liquid highlighter and then set about formulating your own. You’ll receive the results of our microbiological testing (preservative efficacy test report) which proves the product is properly preserved and safe for use.

Formulate concealer sticks, cream concealer, lightweight/sheer coverage foundation and full coverage foundation suited to your skin tone. Master water-in-oil emulsions, used to make cream concealers and full coverage foundations. Create products to match your skin tone perfectly.

10.1 Introduction to formulating advanced foundation and concealer

Discover the different types of advanced foundation and concealer, their properties and functions, ingredients, storage and shelf-life.

10.2 Formulating advanced concealer sticks

Concealer sticks contain a special blend of thickeners, emollients, pigments and powders to create a smooth product with high coverage and a matte finish. Follow our example formula, with a choice of shades to make, and then use the templates and guidelines provided to formulate your own. A video demonstration will show you how to make the product step by step.

10.3 Formulating advanced cream concealer

Our advanced cream concealer formulation is a water-in-oil emulsion which creates a concealer with a high level of coverage. If you’ve never made a water-in-oil emulsion before, now is the perfect time to start! Follow our formulation example, with a choice of shades to make, and then use the templates and guidelines provided to formulate your own.

10.4 Formulating lightweight oil-free foundation for sheer coverage

Follow our example formula, with a choice of shades to make, and then use the templates and guidelines provided to formulate your own. A video demonstration will show you how to make the product step by step.

Learn to create a stable water-in-oil emulsion with a high amount of pigment to even out your complexion and cover any imperfections. Follow our example formula, with a choice of shades to make, and then use the templates and guidelines provided to formulate your own

Frequently Asked Questions

This course is suitable for formulators of all levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced. Some experience of making or formulating skincare products is beneficial but not essential. The course builds your skills, knowledge and confidence by starting with simpler formulation types and progressing to more complex ones.

For students who are already skilled skincare formulators, this is your opportunity to branch out into a completely different field of cosmetics. By learning to formulate color cosmetics you’ll develop a completely new and unique skill set. This will include a detailed understanding of color theory and how to create pigmented products in a wide range of formats – sticks, creams, pencils, mousse, balms, liquids and powders.

The course focuses on natural ingredients and the vast majority of the ingredients used are naturally derived and COSMOS approved. This means that the example formulas can be certified by major natural and organic standards. You can choose to use organic ingredients if you wish to formulate organic cosmetics.

We use mineral pigments in the course which are nature-identical and approved for use by natural and organic standards such as COSMOS. You can read more about mineral pigments here.

The Diploma in Formulating Natural Makeup and Advanced Color Cosmetics covers a wide range of product types, from simple straightforward formulations to complex ones. We suggest you follow the modules in the given order, so your knowledge and skills will progress gradually before advancing to more complex products.

As part of the course you receive a comprehensive global supplier list, featuring hundreds of cosmetic suppliers from all around the world. Additionally, we provide a list of suppliers of the specialist materials and packaging required for color cosmetics. We give plenty of guidance but there isn’t a set supply list, which means you can choose which ingredients you wish to buy.

We aim to choose ingredients that are easy to find, and many easy to obtain ingredients feature on the course. Some of the more advanced products require specialist ingredients that are not as widely available. Depending on where you are based you may need to order them from overseas suppliers that ship internationally; we also give ideas for substitute ingredients. If you have difficulty obtaining ingredients for a specific product, you could choose to make a different format of that product instead, for example a blusher stick rather than a mousse blush. There are lots of options to choose from within the course.

Yes, all of the products can be made using vegan ingredients and we include many vegan formulas, including vegan mascara and vegan lipstick.

Yes! The course is a fully online training program hosted in our online classroom. It is designed to be taken from home from anywhere in the world and the products we make meet global quality and safety standards. Yes, when you have finished the course there will be several assignments to submit. These are straightforward to complete and based on the material covered in the class. On successful completion, your course certificate will be issued.

Now! You can get started with the course right away.

The course is a self-study, self-paced course so you can study at a time that suits you. All the lessons are pre-recorded, so you don’t need to worry about joining us at a set time.

You will have access to the course inside our Natural Cosmetic Formulation Club for 18 months from the date you enroll. You will be able to download the course textbooks to save on your own computer. If you’d like to continue your access after 18 months you can do that by paying a small monthly fee.
